Endless Art without Rules

In the beginning of 2012, when I was sorting out the corporate culture collections, I saw some photos that I took in the late 70s and calendars made of them which reminded me my time in San Francisco. I was participating in business activities and made use of leisure time to express my feeling with camera. I remembered shooting maple leaves during a training in Ohio State University organized by the State Council in 1980s. Memories kept pouring in that when I was busy observing and studying abroad I'd still make time to photograph the beautiful sceneries in the States which I can't cherish more. Certain regrets as there were in my past photographing experience, it aroused my interest in studying the enterprise culture and photography culture after I reached sixty and retired.

In 2007 and 2008, I traveled twice to the States to photograph in Alaska, Wyoming, Montana and other places. In southeastern Alaska I took a propeller aircraft flying at an altitude of over 5500 meters to photograph the snowcapped peak of Denali. Later that, we landed on Denali glacier and the trip was so breathtaking that I shall never forget. In 2009, I met some friends from Sichuan and Beijing who were also enthusiastic photographers. Then we started our first photography trip driving and shooting in the west of America. During the 25-day trip, we traveled day and night for over 6000 kilometers, of which we walked over a hundred kilometers on wild mountain roads, washboard roads and gravel riverbed roads. We took photos of Waves Valley, Horseshoe Bay, Death Valley, Indians’ simple monument and other scenic spots. We kept exploring and discovering the beauty of the land all along the trip. The trip was extremely exhausting, but apart from that we've harvested passion, surprise and gratification. Being able to accomplish these professional photographs in my sixties, I felt the beauty and dedication of photography. It also gave me a chance to appreciate the beauty and spirit of a wild western America and comprehend the magnificent nature. The resemblance was uncanny that experiencing every step forward in desert and every obstacle in my over-40-year career. And that’s why the satisfaction was so strong. It occurred to me that were I not to shoot more beautiful sceneries, I would regret even more in my seventies.

In the first half of 2010, on Fasten Group Photography Annual Meeting, I learned that a Beijing photographer had driven along the tracks of American photographer David Muench and Australian master Patrick to film the west. This once again intrigued me, as then honored “the senior”, to shoot in western America so that my long yearning would be fulfilled. This time I made detailed recollection and records based on the past two trips so that I can share the them with everyone. On October 18, 2011, the trip began as planned and we came back on November 12th. During the 27-day trip in west America, we traveled 8707 kilometers through seven states including Oregon, California, Utah, Arizona, Nevada, Colorado, New Mexico and Hawaii. During the journey, with safety being assured, we focused more on photography. We prepared abundant rice and bread before the start and always chose to live in small inns. Our food was mainly self-made. No fancy cuisine yet simple homemade dishes and rice were pretty delicious to us. We sticked to the planned route, though several adjustments were made, and took photos at will.

I had been to Mono Lake before but due to bad weather I hadn't got the opportunity to photo the alluring reflection of the sunglow there. But this time, my dream came true. The lighthouse at sunrise of Mono Lake realized my dream and eased my regret. At the world’s biggest Bryce Canyon, though I'd had great photographs of it the last time, this time, except for adding its views under sunrise and sunset, I went down to the bottom to accomplish my wish of filming along the rugged paths. We've shot Toketee Falls, Mossbrae Falls, Proxy Falls, Metlako Falls, Punch Bowl Falls and Silver Falls along the trip. Although I had shot Niagara Falls and Iguassu Falls before, this time we were photographing in virgin forests and it was quite tough. We've experienced early startup when there was no sun, driving for miles where danger accompanied, walking for hours where there was no people at all and being on cliffs where even no animals would appear so as to find the best angle. It was through those fabulous angles that I was able to appreciate the photography masters’ wisdom, courage and greatness. Only after all the perseverance and persistence can someone encounter the marvelous beauty of nature. We managed to take the so called “Egg Garden”, which was a bit like rare rock mountains in China. It took us miles of walk through desert and grassland to get there. And when we returned, it was total dark. We could barely see but walk on the rocks by consciousness, yet the extraordinary lighting effect was beyond words. We were so touched that we savored the harmonious nature with us in it. What a gift and treasure to mankind! Lake Tahoe is over 500 meters deep. Its views in sunrise and sunset were like gorgeous paintings. The water was so pure and its reflection of the long lakeshore and mountains was exquisite. In the trip we luckily came across some cowboys with their herd. We had photographed similar scenes in Xinjiang, Tibet and Inner Mongolia, but this time, it surprised us the most. The dust kicked up by the running horses, the mountains, the forest and everything showed the passionate interaction between nature and creatures. On the south edge of the well-known Grand Canyon, or the so called “Mini Canyon”, in Colorado National Park, we bumped into a sudden heavy rain. And the following morning, we saw this majestic heavy snow which built a dream world. Last time I photographed scenic spots like Antelope Canyon and Yosemite, and this time, I was lucky enough to snap the beautiful colors of Zebra Canyon. Especially when it was at Bryce Canyon, Devil Garden and Goblin Valley State Park, loneliness among the mountains apart, we felt the perfection of the environment protection in America. We were totally lost in the miraculous mountains and rare rocks and inspired by the essence which American photography masters delivered by exploring this wild virgin land. In my opinion, a great scenic photograph is seventy percent luck, twenty percent wisdom and ten percent equipment. This trip in west America went on quite well thanks to our sincere attitude toward photography and thank god for all the luck that we've been granted.

To me, I have my unique pursuit on photography culture. With my aging, I always value safety the most so there will always be regrets. But when it comes to art, there is no rules. What we are pursuing is the uttermost joy, or certain distinct accomplishment in photography. I was honored to appreciate some masterpieces of famous American photographers. I enjoyed their precise capture of light and shadow, strict composition of the pictures and the simple style of color distributing. They were not trying to show the abstract or unusual but the natural and real, from which the genuine affection was emitted.

I selected some photos that I took during several trips in America and had this album Beautiful Images published to exchange experiences with everyone, share the hardship and joy from the trips and also share the greatness and beauty of this miraculous land. I hope that every waterfall, mountain, rare rock, beach, canyon or stream there would give you infinite imagination and desire of beauty, help you feel the ravishment with no strings attached and make you a relaxed, clear yet passionate mind.

Now, I want to say that art does not follow any rules and it is limitless. I’m an amateur in this and my aim of photography is to share, enjoy, and study with you all. With this album, we share beautiful life, affection and future together and we seek for poetic images of human and nature together. It is one small photograph that makes a glimpse to eternity. I hope you'll enjoy this album and thank you.
