I took the plane to Newark on August 29th,2012, United Airline, number 088. I looked at my watch as the plane took off; it was just on time, 3:45. The vibrating plane cut my thoughts. I looked outside and saw the brownish yellow ground rapidly pass through the window. As the plane rose higher, my heart beat faster. I felt like I were a bird that escaped from cages, and were able to fly freely in the sky.
It may be because my mind was filled with anxiousness and excitement;I hardly remember the trip on plane, but it's not a beautiful experience to remember anyway. I did dream about being a good student in America, because I was deceived by those words about the U.S. education in China. Almost everyone told me the American education is very easy to deal with. As some people told me: “The math is like our lower school math.” “Don't be afraid, you will be a top student.” “You won't feel any pressure there...”
After ten months of studying in Hamden Hall, I want to tell those people they are totally wrong. The teaching material of the U.S. is even harder for me. Until now, I still think I may be more used to Chinese education, at least in some courses.
One day, I trembled in the car. It was like waking up from a dream. In my dream, I was still in China fighting for high school entrance exam with friends who speak the same language. Then I surprisingly and sadly realized that I was in America and on my way to Hamden Hall. I thought that my one-year American life was even more like a dream. This is my motive for writing this essay. I want to write down the differences brought by that flight, both the great experiences I had in America and in China.
Our morning starts with chatting.Students talk about shows, pets, or homework from different courses. Sometimes the class has already started while the teacher is talking to other students. There are students coming late in two or three minutes and hurrying to their seats. All the classes are more likely to be a small group discussion. Only 16 students are in my Civilization class, and we all sit around a big table. Today's topic is about the Milgram experiment. It is an experiment to test how obedient people would be under the authority. One student raises her hand and talks about whether it should be carried because it is putting a lot of pressure on the experimenter. Our Teacher encourages different opinions, and students are willing to think differently.〖〗Our morning starts with the reading voice of students, the scribbling sound of pencils, and the tired yawns of classmates who stayed up late. When the class bell rings, everyone has to be quiet and sitting on their seats. In fact, when the preparatory bell rings we should stay in classrooms to wait for teachers to come. Textbooks are tidily put at the upper left corner of the table. As the teacher announces, “Class begins,” everyone stands up and says, “Hello, teacher.” The classroom gets quiet immediately; the only person who has the right to talk is our teacher. Our job in the class is to copy down what teacher writes on the board. No one likes to question our teacher. It is like a showing off action in China.〖〗
In the 5 minutes' break between classes, students file out of different buildings. Huge backpacks on students' shoulders look like shells that bend down their bodies. Colorful clothes dazzle my eyes and show the great youthfulness of teenagers.〖〗
In the 10 minutes' break between classes, students either stay on their seats or hurry out to get some water. Piles of books are stuffed in desks, as well as snacks and drinks that are not allowed to take into the classroom. The same uniform on every student creates a unified scene throughout the campus.〖〗
My Civilization and English class both require essays, which is really a challenge for me, as I need to choose my own topic and write freely. The 4 pages' required length could make me struggle for the whole night, and words slowly flow out on the computer screen. I have to go back and change something with only a few words. When I was writing my 5-page term paper, I stayed up all night. I believe I must look like the famous Japanese ghost blankly staring at the screen.〖〗
My Chinese class needs compositions in every exam, and it has to be more than 800 words, which is always a panic to me. The complex Chinese characters fill in pages like ants crawling on papers. I know this description is strange, but to me it is that feeling. The essay is judged on affection. The more emotional your writing is, the higher grade you will get. But how many impressive things can happen in these short years of a middle school student's life? Everyone turned to make up stories that could affect teachers. To me, it is more like a task than a free expression.〖〗
“Where should we go now?” “Library, as usual.”Different classes have different class-rooms. Civilization classroom has a big table for discussion. On the wall there are several maps. Math classroom is decorated with posters about Pascal Triangles. Chemistry classroom is filled with models and tools. We shuttle in and out of different classrooms during different times of the day. It is fun to find out where the classroom is for the first time. But now I think I am more used to an unchange ̄able classroom that records every little thing in life. Or maybe I just do not want to move.
〖〗
“Where should we go now?” “Back to classroom as usual. I think the teacher asked us to be there by 12:30.” “Well, it seems that we have no choice. I will go out of school tomorrow to get that magazine then.” A classroom on the fourth floor of the middle school building contains three years of my memory. I remember when I was sweeping the floor, it accidentally led me to find out secrets written on the paper; I remember printing funny things on the white walls and I had to clean them up by hand; I remember watching classmates fighting on the narrow paths.〖〗
We quietly wait for the teachers to hand back our exam papers. Since they are folded, others cannot see the scores. Students do ask about grades sometimes, but most of the time grades are private things. The comments that teachers give out are detailed and encouraging. Also, we are welcome to talk to our teachers about this. I remember that my chemistry teacher is free during the A, D, and E period.〖〗
The busiest time in a year is after the exam. We compare our answers to estimate our grades and go back and forth to teacher's office to see if we can get some evaluation or ranking. Some come back with a victorious and complacent grin; some come with head hanging in frustration. My teachers like to call out the highest score and its winner. Sometimes I am so happy that I was called out, but I had to make a normal face not to anger my classmates.
Although a lot of things have changed during these months, there is still something that remains the same. For example, the feeling when I finish my work. As I type down this line, I suddenly feel at ease.
