Customizing page properties

When you create your documents you tell Scribus how the page should look. You set:

  • A size
  • An orientation
  • The margins

But sometimes, you need some changes in your document. From that, you can consider several options depending on what you need.

  • Do you want the changes to apply to every new page?
  • Do you want to modify an existing page?
  • Do you want to affect the way you'll organize the content of the page?
  • Do you want to change the page itself?

We could go on with a longer list. But this will help with choosing the best Scribus method.

Mainly, if you want to change the new pages or all the pages of your document, just go to the Document part of the Document Setup (in the File menu). There you can change the setting you want. They are very similar to the New Document dialog, so no extra information is needed.

Customizing page properties

If you want the new settings to be applied to existing pages, you should think of selecting the All Document Pages and/or All Master Pages checkboxes. Otherwise, the changes will be applied only to new pages.

If you only need to change the properties of one single page, Page | Manage Page Properties is a better place to go. Here you will have the same settings except for the bleeds, which can only be set for the whole document. Everything else can be adapted and applied only to the current page. Keep in mind that if you change the size of the page and your document is double-sided, you should probably change the size of the other side too: Scribus won't do it for you.

Tip

Changing paper size is not so easy

To change the page size to a custom size not listed in the list, just choose Custom at the very bottom of the list so that the Height and Width field can be changed.

Scribus won't align folds of the modified pages either. This is only a display problem. However, remember that having several page sizes in a document can be tricky for the print shop: they need to use another printer and sometimes a different paper. If you need this, talk about it to your print provider.

Have a go hero - add a larger page

Have you already seen documents whose pages were sometimes smaller or larger than other pages? We often do it for advertising, for special content, or to get more space, too. If you have a really great landscape photo, maybe a panorama, you'd want to give it more space in your layout, but it will take the place of your text. In this case, you can consider adjusting the page size. Let's say you want a full view of Buckingham Palace on Page 4, which will need to be twice the size of the actual page. Don't forget you're working on a double-sided book!
