[趣释]【物事喻指】1844年5月,美国人赛缪尔·莫尔斯(Samuel Morse)发明了电报,各公司立即架设电报线。开始时,电报线得来的消息很乱,电线又没有被拉直,活像葡萄藤,就把电报称作葡萄藤电报(grapevine telegraph)。从电报得来的消息说成“从葡萄藤得来”。在1861年至1865年美国南北战争(U.S.Civil War)期间,除军事指挥官利用电报联络指挥报告战况外,电报还常常被当作传播小道消息的工具。于是,“从葡萄藤得来的”(by grapevine)或(to hear sth. through/on grapevine)就被人们用来喻指从小道消息听到、从传说中听说。
[运用]I heard it through the grapevine that the boss and his secretary are getting married next month. 我听到有人说,老板和他的秘书下个月要结婚。
