［趣释］【物事喻指】1844年5月，美国人赛缪尔·莫尔斯（Samuel Morse）发明了电报，各公司立即架设电报线。开始时，电报线得来的消息很乱，电线又没有被拉直，活像葡萄藤，就把电报称作葡萄藤电报（grapevine telegraph）。从电报得来的消息说成“从葡萄藤得来”。在1861年至1865年美国南北战争（U.S.Civil War）期间，除军事指挥官利用电报联络指挥报告战况外，电报还常常被当作传播小道消息的工具。于是，“从葡萄藤得来的”（by grapevine）或（to hear sth. through/on grapevine）就被人们用来喻指从小道消息听到、从传说中听说。

［运用］I heard it through the grapevine that the boss and his secretary are getting married next month． 我听到有人说，老板和他的秘书下个月要结婚。
