Introduction

1. Cherish Memory of Jiangnan Lyrics by Bai Juyi(772-846)

So nice Jiangnan,

Its views still in my eyes.

At sunrise riverside flowers are redder than fire,

In spring green waves grow as blue as sapphire,

Which I can’t but admire?

Recalling of Jiangnan,

Hangzhou gives me a big thrill.

Seeking cassia seeds at moonlit temple in the hill,

Leaning on arbor while watching billows at will,

How soon could I revisit this wonderland?

Recalling of Jiangnan,

For Wu Palace is the next I pine.

Sipping a cup of spring-bamboo-leave-wine,

So intoxicating to see lotus-nymphs dance so fine.

I could see the fairyland again soon!

2. Drinking on Lake after Rain Lyricsby Su Shi(1037-1101)

The Sun plays on the floodings, the scene is riant,

The drizzles misting the mountains is also a sight.

Comparing West Lake to“West Beauty”,

Both are charming in light dress as well in bright.

Yachting on West Lake in the Evening

The quiet water rippled in the breeze, the lake seems boundless,

The lotus blooming at night spreads the fragrance in the wind.

Seeing the dim light from the distance temple,

I am enjoying the night piece at the darkness night.

3. Picking Mulberries Lyrics by Ouyang Xiu(1007-1073)

Viewed from a light boat with short oars, West Lake is fair.

Green water winds along,

The banks overgrown with sweet grass;here and there

Faintly we hear a flute song.

The water surface is smooth like glass when no wind blows,

I feel the boat moves no more,

Leaving ripples behind, it goes,

The startled waterbirds skim the flat sandy shore.

Whoever understands the loveliness of West Lake,

The ever-present remains any time,

Drive to chase each other; between flowers and trees,

Greedily we drink with wine.

I stand freely along the lake seeing the scenario in the vapor,

Green grass and the sunset look so fair,

Waving softly, egret comes,

As if only a small dot among the shore.

4. Lin’an Spring Just Cleared Lyricsby Lu You(1125-1210)

For years I have brushed aside worldly affairs ,

Why should I ride off to stay in the capital ?

All night in my attic I hear the spring fall ,

Apricot blossoms will be sold in the lanes tomorrow.

I dash off some slanting lines on short strip of paper ,

And the sunny window prepare for fine tea.

Never mind if my white clothes are soiled by dust ,

Early in the fourth month I shall be home again.

Girls washing silk LyricsbyWangChangling(698-756)

Along the Qiangtang River, whose houses are there?

Their girls are much charming like flowers.

The ancient beauty Xishi hide for many years while becoming a tyrant’s dear,

How dare the pretty girls washing silks openly!

5. Stepping on Zhang Pavilion and Watching the Tide Lyrics by Meng Haoran(689-740)

The roar of thunder was heard a hundred miles away,

The play of musical instruments had to be ceased right away.

Out of the mansion in single file,

To watch the tide on the brink of river.

Sunshine is veiled by the fall clouds,

The river is like a sea, wide and vast.

Rolling waves pressing on like snow-slide,

Sitting there, with the whole body shivering with coldness.

6. Leave the Jingci Temple in the Morning to see Lin Zifang off

Lyrics by Yang Wanli (1127-1206)

The West Lake is set, after all, in the month of June;

From the other seasons, the views are of a different kind.

Lotus leaves, green and exuberant, merge with the blue;

Their flowers, sun-tinged red, look exceptionally fine.

7. Pagoda of Six Harmonies Lyrics by Lin Zexu(1785-1850)

Apagoda stands overlooking the flowing river,

In the deepening twilight one’s gaze cannot go far.

Sunset makes the wild trees look taller,

Return of woodmen prompted the moon to climb over the sandbar.

Thousands of lights illuminate the temple south of town,

Dots of boats are sailing home from high seas afar.

The monk of Moya persuaded the guest to stay on,

His bitter affection even touched river go turn its head.

Note: The West Lake described in Ouyang Xiu's Picking Mulberries is located in Yingzhou of Anhui Province, not the one in Hangzhou-Jiaxing-Huzhou Plain of Zhejiang Province. Adopting of this Song Lyrics in the music piece is just a use of the outstanding poetry in Song Dynasty to paint the beautiful natural scenes.
