Jim MacLaren was born with both great passions and talents for sports and had played sports all the way to Yale University where he not only excelled(表现突出) in his course studies, but also in lacrosse(长曲棍球)and football. There seemed to be a bright future lying before this dynamic young man. But a nearly fatal accident changed everything.

After getting his undergraduate diploma, MacLaren moved to New York city. Three weeks later, on his motorcycle, MacLaren was hit by a city bus. Rushed to the hospital, he was originally diagnosed as“dead on arrival”. The doctors made a decision that because of MacLaren's severe injuries, they had to amputate(切断)his left leg below the knee. After MacLaren woke up from his coma(昏迷), he rehabbed(复建) in earnest and started swimming. Surprisingly MacLaren spent no time being depressed. Soon he was ready to resume life as an athlete. This time he devoted his time to becoming a triathlete(三项运动能手). With great determination he competed and set new records in some of the toughest races in the world.

Then in 1993, MacLaren's life took another turn. While he was racing another triathlon(三项全能赛), his car was hit by a van at an intersection. This time, MacLaren broke his neck and became paralyzed(瘫痪). Slowly, Maclaren has once again endured all the obstacles and pulled himself back again. Now he even has reclaimed some motor function of his limbs(四肢).

“There are times I don't like the way my life went, but that doesn't mean that I'm not in love with life, ”says Jim MacLaren, the founder of the Choose Living Foundation. MacLaren insists that he will not be defeated and he will not lose himself to his body or frustration. Today working as a motivational(激励人心的) speaker, MacLaren demonstrates the power of human potential with his own life experiences. He refuses to regard himself as a victim; instead he is grateful for the opportunity he's been given to motivate other people. Sometimes life may not work in a favorable way, but MacLaren's story tells us that disadvantages can be turned into advantages.
