70．不能为某人秉烛

［趣释］【物事喻指】蜡烛（candle）是用蜡或油脂制成的照明用品。早在15世纪至16世纪，英国城市的街上没有路灯，夜里一片漆黑。那些有钱人夜晚外出时，一般由家奴在前面秉烛引路，为主人服务。家奴在当时的社会地位是十分低下的，如果有人连这等当家奴为人秉烛的资格都没有，其地位也就不言而喻了。于是，人们就用“不能为人秉烛”（can't hold a candle to sb.）喻指不能与某人相提并论，远远不如某人。英国作家威廉·梅克比斯·萨克雷（William Makepeace Thackeray）在其小说《华浮世界》（Vanity Fair）中就引用了这个典故。
